UAE Pest Calendar: What to Expect Each Season and When to Book Treatment | Al Asfour Al Zahabi
A seasonal guide to pests in the UAE, from summer heat to winter rain and long trips during Ramadan and the holidays. Find out which pests are active each season, what to check at home, and when to schedule preventive treatment.
Many pest problems in UAE homes can be predicted before they happen, because they are tied to the seasons: summer heat, scattered winter rain and long periods of travel. When you know what is active in each season, you can check the right place at the right time and schedule preventive treatment before a problem turns into an infestation. This calendar helps you plan your whole year.
Why do you need a pest calendar in the UAE?
In practice the UAE climate has two main seasons: a long, very hot summer with rising humidity on the coasts, and a short, mild winter with scattered rain, with transitional periods in spring and autumn between them. But homes that are air-conditioned all year create a stable indoor climate, so some pests such as German cockroaches and bed bugs live indoors in every season, while the pests coming in from outside change with the season.
The details also vary with the type of home and the area. A flat in a Dubai Marina tower is affected more by what happens in neighbouring flats and shared drains, a villa with a garden in Al Ain or Khalifa City is affected by irrigation, soil and the desert edge, and coastal homes in Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain are affected by humidity. Use this calendar as a general guide and adjust it to what you notice at home.
Spring (March to May): activity returns
As temperatures rise gradually, many insects come out of their winter lull and start breeding. This period is ideal for prevention before the summer peaks.
- Ants: colonies become active and start forming trails towards kitchens and plant pots. Follow the trail to the entry point and seal it.
- Termites: on some warm evenings you may notice swarms of winged insects around lights, or shed wings near windows and doors. This is a sign worth a specialist inspection, especially in villas with woodwork and gardens.
- Flies: increase with the milder weather and more outdoor gatherings, especially near rubbish bins and animal areas.
- Pigeons: nesting on balconies and above AC units becomes common, and fitting pigeon deterrents before they settle is easier than removing them after they nest.
- Scorpions and snakes: become more active as nights warm, especially in homes near the desert, farms and mountains.
What to do in spring: inspect around the house, seal gaps under doors and around pipes, clear piled wood and stones from the garden, and make this your first preventive treatment of the year.
Summer (June to September): heat drives pests indoors
When temperatures pass forty degrees, insects look for shade and water, and the nearest place offering both is your air-conditioned home. That is why summer is the season of the most common complaints.
Cockroaches
The large American cockroach comes out of hot sewer networks at night and climbs into homes through dry or damaged drains. The German cockroach breeds faster in warm kitchens. Start by fitting drain covers tightly and keeping traps filled with water regularly.
Ants looking for water
In intense heat ants look for water more than food, so you see them around sinks, bathrooms, AC trays and plant pots. Fix any leak, however small, and dry sinks at night.
Mosquitoes from AC water
Even without rain, AC units produce constant condensation. If it collects in trays or small puddles, it is a mosquito breeding source all summer.
Bed bugs after travellers return
Many families travel in summer, and some come back with bed bugs in their luggage. Check suitcases before bringing them into bedrooms, and wash clothes in hot water and dry them on high heat. You will find detailed steps in our guide to bed bugs after travel.
Humidity in late summer
In August and September humidity usually rises on the coasts, so silverfish and mould increase in wardrobes and cockroaches become more active.
What to do in summer: focus on drains, water and the kitchen, book a follow-up visit if your first treatment was in spring, and do not delay cockroach treatment if you see them during the day.
Autumn (October and November): time for a preventive review
Temperatures start to drop, people return to gardens and outdoor seating, and in some years the first scattered rain arrives. Autumn is one of the best times for a thorough preventive treatment, because the pests that bred in summer are still there and the coming winter brings its own problems.
- Review the state of the home after summer: did cockroaches appear in the bathrooms? Are there new leaks?
- Clear roof drains and gutters before the rainy season.
- Check storerooms, garages and outbuildings, as rodents may have settled there during the summer.
- Prepare the garden for winter planting without piling organic fertiliser near the house, as it attracts flies.
Winter (December to February): rain, rodents and gardens
Mosquitoes after rain
Every spell of rain leaves puddles on roofs, in gardens and on construction sites, and mosquitoes appear a few days later. Empty and scrub containers within a day or two of the rain stopping. Full details are in our guide to mosquitoes after rain in the UAE.
Rodents looking for shelter and food
Rats and mice are around all year, but they may come closer to homes and storerooms during rainy, relatively cool periods, looking for dry shelter and food. Signs include small dark droppings, gnaw marks on bags and cables, and sounds of movement in the false ceiling at night. Do not use poisons yourself at home if you have children or pets; book a rodent control service to place sealed bait stations in the right spots.
Gardens, camping and scorpions
Winter is the season for garden work and desert trips. Scorpions are less active in the cold, but they hide under stones, wood and stacked firewood and in storerooms, so you are more likely to meet one when lifting these things. Wear thick gloves, do not lift stones with your bare hands, and shake out shoes and clothes left outside. Never try to catch a scorpion or snake, and if you are stung or bitten, seek medical help immediately by calling 999 or going to the nearest hospital. Read more in our guide to scorpions and snakes in Al Ain and desert-edge homes.
Ramadan, holidays and travel: the empty home
Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year, so its season changes, but its effect on the home is similar: more cooking, meals stretching into the night, and leftover food and sweets sitting on worktops for hours, which attracts ants and cockroaches. Clean the kitchen before bed, close sugar and date containers tightly, and take the rubbish out every day.
During Eid and summer holidays many homes stay empty for weeks, and this brings a problem few people expect: dry drain traps. The water in the bend under the sink and in floor drains stops smells and insects coming up, and when it evaporates the route is open to American cockroaches.
Before you travel
- Clear perishable food from the fridge and take out all the rubbish.
- Pour water into every drain, then cover it with a plug or tight cover.
- Do not leave pet food bowls or food leftovers anywhere.
- Close windows and doors tightly, and empty outdoor containers and plant saucers so water does not collect in them.
- If possible, ask someone you trust to run the water in the home every week or two.
After you return
- Open the windows to ventilate, and pour water into the drains before anything else.
- Check the kitchen and bathrooms for cockroaches or droppings.
- Check suitcases before bringing them into bedrooms, and wash travel clothes.
- Check the pool and garden for standing water if it rained while you were away.
What to schedule when, and how regular visits work
A quick summary of the year
- March and April: first preventive treatment of the home and its surroundings, termite inspection for villas, and pigeon deterrents if needed.
- June and July: follow-up for cockroaches and ants, checks of drains and AC trays, and preparing the home before travel.
- August and September: bed bug checks after returning from travel, and attention to humidity and silverfish in coastal homes.
- October and November: a thorough preventive review, clearing roof drains, and checking storerooms for rodents.
- December to February: acting quickly against mosquitoes after every spell of rain, monitoring rodents, and taking care in gardens and on desert trips.
What happens during a regular visit?
Every visit starts with an inspection to see what has changed since the last one, and the technician then chooses the method that suits the season: gel baits for cockroaches inside the kitchen, residual spraying around entry points, drains and the outside of the home, dust in voids and cracks, sealed bait stations for rodents, and larval treatment in water that cannot be emptied. Fogging is used only when needed, because it kills flying insects only at the time of application.
Before the visit, clear kitchen worktops and cover food, and tell the team if there are children, pregnant women, people with asthma or pets. After treatment, follow the re-entry time the technician gives you, usually a few hours, ventilate the home well, and do not wipe the sprayed areas along the skirting.
Expect pests to decline gradually over one to two weeks, and existing infestations to need a follow-up visit because eggs hatch after the first treatment. In a preventive programme, visits are usually every few months depending on the type of home and the level of risk.
When do you need a pest control company?
- If you see cockroaches during the day or in bedrooms.
- If you find small dark spots on mattresses or wake up with repeated bites after travelling.
- If you notice shed wings or mud tubes that point to termites.
- If you hear movement in the ceiling at night or find rodent droppings.
- If mosquitoes persist for more than a week after rain despite emptying standing water.
- If you own a villa with a large garden or a home near the desert and want a year-round preventive programme.
The Al Asfour Al Zahabi team provides pest control in Dubai and the other emirates, with one-off visits or regular programmes. Prices usually start from AED 150 for a small flat and vary with the size of the property, the type of pest and the level of infestation.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need pest control in winter?
Yes, in many homes. German cockroaches and bed bugs live indoors all year, winter rain brings mosquitoes, and rodents may come closer looking for shelter. Winter is also a good time to treat gardens and storerooms.
What is the best month for preventive treatment?
There is no single ideal month for every home, but spring before the heat peaks and autumn after the summer ends suit most families. If you have a problem now, do not wait for the season.
How many regular visits do I need a year?
It depends on the type of home. Many flats need only a few visits a year, while villas with gardens and homes near the desert or the coast need more. The technician suggests a programme after the first inspection.
Why do cockroaches appear after I come back from a trip?
Usually because the water in the drain traps evaporated while you were away, opening the route for American cockroaches from the sewer. Pour water into every drain before travelling and cover them, and repeat as soon as you return.
Are there more scorpions in summer or winter?
Scorpions are more active on warm nights from spring to autumn; they move less in the cold but hide under stones and wood, so you can meet one at any time when lifting these things. Never touch them, and seek medical help immediately if you are stung.
Is one preventive spray enough for the whole year?
Usually not, because products lose effect over time and with cleaning, and because pests change with the seasons. It is better to have a main visit followed by follow-ups according to the season and the type of home.
