Pest Control Visit Preparation Checklist: Before and After | Al Asfour Al Zahabi

A practical step-by-step checklist for preparing the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms before a pest control visit, and what to do during it. Learn what to clean after treatment and what not to wipe, when to mop, what to expect in the following days and when to call the company.

The success of a pest control visit does not depend only on the technician and the product he uses. It also depends on the state of your home when he arrives and on what you do in the days that follow. A full cupboard can block access to a cockroach hiding place, and a single wipe in the wrong spot can remove the layer that was meant to keep working for weeks. This is a practical checklist covering before, during and after the visit, which you can go through item by item.

Why does preparation make a difference to the result?

Household pests live in hidden places: behind appliances, inside cupboard hinges, under the sink and in the cracks of the bed frame. If the technician cannot reach these places, he will only treat what he can see, and the main hiding places stay as they are. That is why one hour of preparation can save you an extra visit.

There is a second reason: some habits people think are helpful actually weaken the treatment. Spraying a shop product the day before the visit can make cockroaches avoid the gel, and cleaning with strong products straight after the visit can remove the residual product from the edges. Proper preparation means knowing what to do and what to leave alone.

In UAE apartments and towers, where flats are connected through air-conditioning ducts and shared plumbing openings, small details matter even more: an open gap under the sink or a dry floor drain can be a permanent entry route if nobody pays attention to it.

Two or three days before the visit: information and arrangements

  • Identify the pest as far as you can: photograph the insect or keep one in a sealed bag. The small German cockroach is treated differently from the large American cockroach that comes from drains, and bed bugs are different from fleas.
  • Note where and when you see it: in the kitchen at night, in the bathroom near the drain, or bites on the arms in the morning. This information helps the technician choose the method and the location.
  • Tell the company who lives in the home: babies, a pregnant woman, someone with asthma, cats, birds and fish tanks. This changes the choice of products and the way of working, as we explain in our guide to pest control with children and pets at home.
  • Stop spraying shop products: at least several days before the visit, because they can drive insects away from baits and scatter them to other places.
  • Ask how long you need to stay out: and book somewhere for the family and pets to go if the treatment includes spraying.
  • Inform building management if needed: some towers ask for advance notice before technicians enter, and some arrange treatment of common areas and garbage rooms.
  • Fix obvious leaks: water dripping under the sink or from the AC unit attracts cockroaches and ants, and fixing it before the visit makes the treatment more effective.

Preparing the kitchen

The kitchen is the most important place in most cockroach and ant cases, and it is also the place that needs the most preparation.

  1. Empty the lower cupboards and the cupboard under the sink: put their contents in boxes or bags on a table in another room. These cupboards are close to pipes and moisture and are among the most common hiding places.
  2. Upper cupboards: if you have seen cockroaches or their droppings, which look like grains of black pepper, empty these too. If they are clean, ask the technician whether he needs them.
  3. Food: put bread, fruit, sugar and open grains in the fridge or in airtight containers. Throw away any food where you found insects.
  4. Utensils and dishes: put plates and exposed cooking utensils inside a cupboard that will not be treated, or cover them with plastic.
  5. Pull appliances slightly away from the wall if you can: such as the fridge and microwave, because behind them there is warmth, moisture and food residue. If that is difficult, leave it for the technician.
  6. Clean grease and food residue: wipe the worktops, the oven front and the edges of the hob, because built-up grease is food that competes with the bait.
  7. Empty the bin and close it well: and take the rubbish out before the appointment.

Important note: do not use strong-smelling cleaners or bleach inside the cupboards just before the visit. Clean with soap and water and leave the cupboards dry.

Preparing bedrooms and bathrooms

For bed bugs

Preparing bedrooms for bed bugs is different from cockroaches and needs particular care so you do not carry the infestation to other rooms yourself:

  • Do not move mattresses, pillows or clothes from the infested room to a clean room before treatment.
  • Collect sheets, pillowcases, curtains and clothes near the bed in sealed plastic bags inside the same room, then wash them at the highest temperature the fabric can take and dry them on high heat.
  • Items that cannot be washed, such as shoes, bags and soft toys, can go in the dryer on high heat if they can take it, or stay in a sealed bag until the technician inspects them.
  • Empty drawers and the bedside table, and pull the bed slightly away from the wall so the technician can reach behind the headboard.
  • Vacuum the floor and carpet edges, then seal the vacuum bag and dispose of it outside the home.
  • Do not throw the mattress away before consulting the technician; many mattresses can be treated, and carrying one unwrapped through corridors and lifts can spread bed bugs.

If the infestation started after a trip or after buying second-hand furniture, our article on bed bugs after travel will help you trace the source and stop it happening again.

Bathrooms

  • Remove toothbrushes, towels and toiletries from open surfaces and put them in a drawer or bag.
  • Empty the cupboard under the sink.
  • Pour a cup of water into floor drains that are rarely used, because a dry drain lets cockroaches and smells come up. If a drain is slow or blocked, it is better to sort that out first through our drain unclogging service, because standing water is an ideal environment for insects.

Children, pets and personal items

  • Collect children's toys from the floor into closed boxes.
  • Put feeding bottles and baby items in the fridge or a sealed bag.
  • Remove pets' food bowls, toys and bedding, and cover the fish tank.
  • Prepare the medicines, documents and chargers you will need during the hours away.

During the visit: what should you do?

  1. Be there at the start: go round with the technician during the inspection and show him where you have seen insects, along with your photos.
  2. Ask about the plan: which method he will use, where and why, and what the product is called.
  3. Agree on no-go areas: such as the child's bed, the dining table and the birds' room.
  4. Ask about re-entry time: ask for it clearly, along with what to wipe and what to leave.
  5. Ask when the follow-up is: many cases need a second visit, especially German cockroaches and bed bugs, because eggs are not always affected by the first treatment.
  6. Leave the home with your family and pets: if the treatment includes spraying, and do not go back in to fetch anything while the work is going on.
  7. Keep the report or invoice: with the visit date, type of treatment and any warranty or follow-up details.

After the visit: what to clean and what not to wipe

This is the stage where most mistakes happen, because wanting to clean the home after treatment is natural, but the wrong cleaning can cancel part of the treatment.

When you first return

  • Do not enter before the time the technician specified has passed.
  • Open the windows and run the kitchen and bathroom extractor fans, and leave the AC running after ventilating.
  • Wipe surfaces that touch food: kitchen worktops, the dining table and door handles, with soap and water.
  • Wash any dishes and utensils left out by mistake before using them.

What not to wipe

  • Gel dots inside cupboards, hinges and behind appliances. If you see them, do not remove them; the insect needs to reach them.
  • The edges between floor and wall, cracks, behind appliances and inside cupboards that were treated.
  • Bait stations: do not move them or open them.
  • Dust placed inside voids or behind panels; do not try to vacuum it away.

When can you mop the floor?

Ask the technician, because the answer depends on the product. The general rule is to postpone a full floor mop for several days if the edges were treated with a residual spray, and in the first days to wipe only the main walkways used by children and pets with a damp cloth, without reaching the edges and corners and without strong cleaning products. With gel-only treatments you can usually go back to normal cleaning while avoiding the gel spots.

Putting items back in cupboards

Wait until treated surfaces are completely dry before putting things back, and it is better to store food in closed containers rather than open bags. If the treatment was for bed bugs, do not put washed clothes back into a room that has not been treated yet, and keep them in sealed bags until the follow-up visit.

What to expect in the following days and weeks, and when to call the company

It is important to know what is normal so you do not worry without reason, and what is not normal so you do not wait longer than you should.

What is normal

  • More cockroach sightings in the first days: because the product drives them out of their hiding places, and you may see them in daytime moving slowly before they die.
  • Dead insects in corners and under appliances: pick them up with a vacuum or a tissue and dispose of them.
  • Small cockroaches appearing after one or two weeks: this happens when eggs that were protected inside their cases hatch, which is why follow-up visits are usually scheduled after a planned interval.
  • Ants gathering around the bait: this means the bait is working, so do not spray it or wipe it.
  • A few bed bug bites in the first week: because bugs that have not yet reached the product are still active, and this decreases gradually.

When to call the company

  • If the same large numbers of cockroaches continue after about two weeks without a clear drop.
  • If the insect appears in a room that was not infested before treatment.
  • If new bed bug bites continue after the follow-up visit.
  • If a different pest appears, such as rodents or termites, because these need a different plan.
  • If a family member feels unusual symptoms after returning home, call the doctor first, then tell the company the name of the product used.

When you contact the company, send photos and specify the places and times. This information makes the follow-up visit more precise than simply spraying again.

Habits that stop pests coming back

  • Do not leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight.
  • Close food containers and take the rubbish out daily, especially in summer.
  • Dry the sink and bathroom floor before bed, and fix any leak straight away.
  • Check shopping cartons and deliveries before bringing them into the kitchen, as they are one of the ways German cockroaches get in.
  • Seal gaps around pipes and fit suitable covers on floor drains.

If you want to link regular cleaning with pest control, you can use our hourly cleaning service and tell the cleaning team where the gel and treated edges are so they avoid them.

When do you need a pest control company?

If you see a single stray insect, cleaning and sealing gaps may be enough. But call a licensed company if you see cockroaches in daytime or in more than one room, notice signs of bed bugs on mattresses, see signs of rodents in the kitchen or ceiling, or have tried shop products without result. When you book, remember that good preparation is part of the treatment, and that a good company will give you clear instructions before and after the visit and agree the follow-up date with you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to empty all the kitchen cupboards?

Not always. The lower cupboards and the one under the sink matter most because they are close to pipes and moisture. Empty the upper cupboards if you have seen insects or droppings in them, or if the technician asks.

Can I deep clean the home before the visit?

Yes, cleaning with soap and water and removing grease and food residue before the visit is helpful. But avoid strong-smelling products and shop sprays, and leave surfaces dry.

When can I mop the floor after pest control spraying?

Ask the technician, because it depends on the product. In general, wipe only the walkways with a damp cloth in the first days, and postpone mopping edges and corners for several days if they were treated with a residual spray.

Why am I seeing more cockroaches after treatment?

This is normal in the first days, because the product makes cockroaches come out of their hiding places before they die. If numbers have not dropped clearly after about two weeks, tell the company.

Do I need to wash all my clothes for bed bugs?

Wash the clothes and fabrics in the infested room and near the bed at the highest temperature the fabric can take, and dry them on high heat. Clothes in distant rooms that are not infested usually do not need this, but do not mix them together.

Will I need a second visit?

In many cases yes, especially with German cockroaches and bed bugs, because eggs may hatch after the first treatment. The company sets the follow-up date according to the type of pest and the level of infestation.
