House Fly and Drain Fly Control for UAE Homes and Restaurants | Al Asfour Al Zahabi
Why do flies keep coming back however much you spray? We explain where house flies and drain flies breed in homes and restaurants, how to tell them apart, the role of screens, sanitation and drain cleaning, and when you need professional control.
One fly in the kitchen is annoying, but dozens around the bin, or tiny flies resting on the bathroom walls every morning, mean there is a breeding site nearby. The secret to fly control is not a stronger insecticide, it is finding the breeding site and removing it. In this guide we explain the difference between house flies and drain flies, why spraying is not enough, and the steps that actually work in UAE homes and restaurants.
Why do flies increase in UAE homes and restaurants?
Flies love heat, and their life cycle gets shorter as temperatures rise. In hot weather an egg can become an adult fly in about a week or a little longer, and a single female lays hundreds of eggs in her lifetime. So a small problem can turn into a clear infestation within a few weeks if the breeding source remains.
Certain factors come up again and again in the UAE: bins left in the heat for hours so food waste ferments inside, waste collection areas in residential compounds and restaurants, gardens using organic fertiliser, pet and bird areas, and even condensate water collecting from AC units. Drain flies are linked to older buildings, rarely used bathrooms and floor drains that are never cleaned.
In winter and the milder months people spend more time in gardens and on balconies and open doors and windows, so flies get in easily. After rain, flies and mosquitoes may increase together because of standing water and decaying material, as we explained in our article on mosquitoes after rain in the UAE.
House fly, drain fly or fruit fly?
Identifying the type tells you where to look for the source, because each type breeds in a different place.
House fly
Grey, about six to seven millimetres long, with dark lengthwise stripes on its back. It flies fast, circles food and rubbish, and rests on surfaces and windows. It breeds in moist, decaying organic matter: food waste in bins, animal droppings, manure and any exposed organic waste. It spreads germs because it lands on filth and then on food and surfaces.
Drain fly
Very small, just a few millimetres, with a body and wings covered in fine hairs that make it look like a tiny grey moth. It flies weakly over short distances, rests on bathroom and kitchen walls near drains, and crumbles like dust when touched. Its larvae live in the slimy layer that builds up inside drains, floor traps, under sinks and in rarely used drain openings.
Fruit fly
Small, yellowish brown, often with red eyes. It gathers around ripe and rotting fruit, vegetable baskets, open juice and drink bottles, and bins containing fruit peel. Unlike the drain fly, its body is smooth rather than hairy, and it hovers around fruit rather than resting on bathroom walls.
A simple test: if you suspect a particular drain, cover it overnight with clear sticky tape, leaving a small gap for air, or place a clear plastic bag over it. If you find small flies stuck to it in the morning, that drain is the breeding site.
Where do flies breed? Find the source first
Before buying any insecticide, walk around the home or restaurant and check these places:
- Bins and waste containers: especially those that are never washed, or where liquid leaks from bags into the bottom.
- Floor drains: in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and balconies, especially rarely used ones or where the water in the trap has dried out.
- Under sinks and appliances: water leaks under the fridge or dishwasher, and food debris behind and under appliances.
- Pet areas: cat litter trays, bird cages and dog areas in the garden if they are not cleaned daily.
- The garden: organic fertiliser, piles of grass clippings, fallen fruit and planters with standing water.
- In restaurants: grease traps, drains under cooking equipment, the waste room, the dishwashing area, vegetable stores and the back door.
Why spraying alone does not work
Many people spray insect spray every day and are surprised when the flies come back. The reason is simple: the spray only kills the adult flies in the air at that moment, while eggs, larvae and pupae keep developing in the bin or drain, and a new generation emerges a few days later.
Repeated spraying in the kitchen also leaves chemicals on surfaces and utensils, and it is never appropriate in food preparation areas in restaurants. With careless use, flies may also respond less to some products. So spraying, if used at all, should be a small part of a plan that starts with sanitation, removing breeding sites and keeping flies out.
Practical steps to get rid of house flies
- Close your bins: use a bin with a tight, foot-operated lid, tie the bag well, and take rubbish out daily, especially in summer.
- Wash the bins: wash the kitchen bin and outdoor container weekly with water and detergent, and dry them before putting in a new bag.
- Do not leave food uncovered: cover food, keep ripe fruit in the fridge, and clean up food scraps and spilled liquids straight away.
- Clean pet areas: remove pet droppings from the garden and the litter tray daily, and do not leave pet food out for hours.
- Look after the garden: pick up fallen fruit, do not leave grass clippings in damp piles, use treated fertiliser and keep compost bins closed.
- Use sticky traps carefully: sticky strips and boards placed away from food help reduce numbers and show the size of the problem, but they do not solve it on their own.
Window and door screens
Screens are one of the simplest and most effective solutions. Fit tight screens on the windows you open, and make sure they are not torn and the frame sits flush with the window. You can fit screen doors on the kitchen or garden door, or plastic strip curtains on service doors. Restaurants use air curtains above doors that open often, while keeping back doors closed.
Getting rid of drain flies step by step
Drain flies do not go away with spraying, because their source is the slimy layer inside the drain. The solution is to remove that layer:
- Identify the affected drain: using the sticky tape or clear bag test on every suspect drain.
- Clean mechanically: remove the drain cover and use a long flexible brush to scrub the pipe walls and remove the slime, hair and deposits.
- Use a biological cleaner or drain gel: biological and enzyme cleaners break down organic matter on the pipe walls. Use them according to the label, leave the product to work for several hours, and repeat for several days.
- Do not rely on boiling water or bleach alone: they may kill some larvae on the surface, but they do not remove the slime layer they breed in, so the flies come back. Never mix bleach with other cleaning products.
- Run water in rarely used drains: pour water into unused bathroom and balcony drains weekly so the trap does not dry out, and cover drains that are never used.
- Fix blockages and leaks: a slow drain holds water and deposits, and a leak under the sink creates a damp environment. If the drain is blocked, book our drain unblocking service in Dubai before treating the flies.
Drain flies usually drop clearly within one to two weeks of regular cleaning. For more tips on keeping bathrooms clean, read our guide to bathroom sanitisation at home.
Professional fly control for homes and restaurants
When flies persist despite good hygiene, or when the site is a restaurant or food business, you need a professional plan. Our mosquito and fly control service in Dubai starts with an inspection before any treatment.
In homes and villas
- Inspection: the technician identifies the fly type and the breeding sites inside the house, in the garden and in the bin area.
- Treating breeding sites: cleaning and treating drains, and treating waste and compost areas with larval products where needed.
- Treating resting sites: targeted residual spraying on outdoor surfaces where flies rest, such as walls near bins and around doors, away from food.
- Baits: fly baits may be used in carefully chosen spots outside.
- Fine misting outdoors: in large gardens a fine mist may be used to knock down adult numbers quickly, as part of the plan and not a replacement for it.
After spraying, keep children and pets away from treated areas until they dry, open windows for ventilation, and follow the technician's instructions on when to go back in.
In restaurants, cafés and food shops
A restaurant cannot tolerate flies, because they contaminate food, damage its reputation and cause problems at inspection. A suitable programme includes:
- Insect light traps: UV units with sticky boards are installed away from food preparation areas, and not directly facing external doors so they do not draw flies in from outside. Boards and tubes are replaced regularly.
- Treating drains and grease traps: regular cleaning of drains under equipment, and keeping the grease trap maintained.
- The waste room: closed containers, daily floor washing, and regular waste removal.
- Treatment outside opening hours: any spraying is done after closing, with equipment covered or food removed, and food contact surfaces cleaned before opening.
- Reports: a written report for every visit showing findings, products used and recommendations.
Details of regular programmes for commercial sites are in our article on pest control for restaurants, offices and shops.
When do you need a pest control company?
- Flies have persisted for more than two weeks despite cleaning and closing the bins.
- You cannot find the breeding site.
- Drain flies appear in more than one bathroom or come back after cleaning.
- You have a villa with a large garden, animals or an outdoor waste area.
- You run a restaurant, café or food shop and need a regular programme with reports.
The cost depends on the area, type of property and level of infestation. It usually starts from AED 150 for a small apartment, while restaurants and regular contracts are priced after an inspection.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the small flies in my bathroom come from?
They are usually drain flies, breeding in the slimy layer inside the floor drain or sink drain. Cleaning the drain with a brush and a biological cleaner is the main solution.
Is insect spray enough to get rid of flies?
No. Spray kills adult flies only, while eggs and larvae carry on in the bin or drain. You need to remove the breeding site first.
Does boiling water kill drain flies?
It may kill some larvae, but it does not remove the slime layer, so the flies usually come back. Mechanical cleaning with a biological cleaner works better.
How long does it take to get rid of flies?
Once the breeding source is removed, flies drop noticeably within one to two weeks, because the generations already developing need time to finish.
Where should I put an insect light trap in a restaurant?
Away from food preparation areas and uncovered dishes, and not directly facing the external door. The technician chooses positions based on fly movement and the restaurant's layout.
Is professional fly control safe at home?
Yes, when it is carried out by a licensed team and you follow the instructions: keep children and pets away until products dry, ventilate, and cover food. Most fly work focuses on hygiene and breeding sites outdoors.
