Large American Cockroaches Coming Up from Drains: Causes and Solutions in the UAE | Al Asfour Al Zahabi
Why do large American cockroaches come up through floor drains and traps in UAE homes, and why do they increase in houses left closed over summer? You will learn their entry points, how to seal them, and how professional drain treatment works alongside drain unblocking.
You open the bathroom door at night and find a large reddish-brown cockroach standing by the floor drain, or you come back from holiday to find two or three in the kitchen even though the house was locked. This is usually the American cockroach, a species that lives mainly in drainage networks and manholes and climbs into homes through them. In this article you will learn how to identify it, exactly where it gets in, why it is so common in the UAE, and what you can do yourself and what to leave to professionals.
How to identify the American cockroach
The American cockroach is one of the largest household cockroaches; an adult can reach about 4 cm or slightly more. It is shiny reddish brown with a pale yellowish band around the shield behind the head. It has long wings covering the body and can fly short distances, especially on hot, humid nights, which frightens many people.
It prefers warm, damp, dark places: drainage networks, manholes, bin rooms, basements, stores and around water heaters. It is less tied to kitchen cabinets than the German cockroach, but it enters homes looking for water and food, or escaping heat or maintenance work in the drains.
How it differs from the German cockroach
- Size: the American is large, around 4 cm; the German is small, usually no more than 1.6 cm.
- Colour and markings: the American is reddish brown with a pale band around the shield; the German is light brown with two dark parallel stripes.
- Source: the American usually comes from drains and outdoors; the German breeds inside the flat itself.
- Treatment: the American needs entry points sealed and drains and perimeter treated; the German needs gel bait and monitoring inside the kitchen.
If the cockroaches you see are small and gather in kitchen cupboards, read our guide to German cockroaches in flats and towers, because they are handled differently.
Signs that it is present
- Large cockroaches appearing at night near bathroom, kitchen and laundry drains.
- Droppings larger than those of the German cockroach, sometimes small and cylindrical, near drain openings and behind the washing machine.
- Dark brown egg cases about the size of a small bean in damp corners or storerooms.
- A foul smell from floor drains, usually a sign that the water seal in the trap has dried out.
Where does the American cockroach get into your home?
Finding the entry point is half the treatment. These are the openings we find most often during inspections of flats and villas:
- Floor traps: in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and balconies. If the cover is broken or loose, or the trap is dry, the drain becomes an open door.
- Shower and bathtub drains: especially in bathrooms that are rarely used, such as the guest bathroom or the maid's room bathroom.
- Washing machine and dishwasher drains: when the drain hose sits loosely in an opening wider than itself.
- Gaps around pipes: where drain and water pipes enter the wall or floor under the sink, if they were not sealed properly.
- AC condensate lines: some condensate lines are connected to the drainage without a proper trap.
- Manholes at villas: cracked or loose covers in the garden and walkways, and rainwater drains around the villa.
- Bin rooms and service corridors: in residential buildings, cockroaches move from bin rooms and shafts into flats through doors and openings.
Why it is so common in UAE homes
Drainage networks in the UAE are warm and damp most of the year, an ideal environment for the American cockroach. As temperatures rise in summer, it becomes more active and moves in search of cooler places or water. There are other factors we see often:
- Maintenance and drain cleaning: when the main drains in the building or street are cleaned or repaired, cockroaches flee the pipes and climb into homes.
- Heavy rain: when stormwater networks fill up, insects are pushed out of the openings.
- Older buildings: cracked pipes, damaged traps and missing covers are common in some older buildings in Sharjah, Ajman and Deira.
- Villas with gardens: constant irrigation creates moisture around foundations, and the many manholes in the garden provide numerous ways in, in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah and elsewhere.
Dry traps in empty homes
Every correctly installed drain has a bend beneath it that holds some water, and this water is the barrier that stops drain smells and insects coming up. When a home is left closed for weeks, as happens during the summer holiday, this water evaporates quickly in the heat and the way is wide open. That is why many people come back from travel to find large cockroaches in the bathroom and a sewage smell in the house.
To avoid this:
- Before travelling, pour a good amount of water into every floor drain and put a tight cover or rubber plug on top.
- For a long trip, ask someone you trust to run the water in bathrooms and kitchens every week or two.
- When you return, run water in all drains and basins before anything else.
- Do not forget drains you never use, such as the balcony drain, the laundry room or the driver's room bathroom in a villa.
Steps you can take yourself: sealing and prevention
Most American cockroach problems inside the home can be greatly reduced by actually sealing the entry points. These are the most important steps:
- Replace broken or wide drain covers with tight-fitting covers with small openings; fine-mesh covers that do not block drainage also work.
- Ask a plumber about fitting floor traps with an anti-backflow valve on drains that often stay dry.
- Seal gaps around pipes under sinks and behind the toilet with silicone or a suitable filler.
- Make sure the washing machine drain hose is fixed firmly inside the drain opening, with the surrounding gap sealed.
- Clean drains regularly with hot tap water and a brush to remove hair, grease and the slimy layer insects feed on.
- At villas, check manhole covers and replace cracked ones, and reduce piles of leaves and standing water around the foundations.
- Do not leave pet food or rubbish bags on the balcony or near the back kitchen door.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not pour a mixture of cleaners, bleach and acids into the drain; mixing them can release dangerous gases, and it will not reach the cockroaches inside the network.
- Do not keep pouring boiling water into plastic pipes; over time it can damage some joints.
- Do not spray household insecticide into the drain every day; it does not reach where cockroaches breed and may push them out of another opening.
- Do not try to open main manholes or climb into them yourself; they can contain harmful gases.
The link between blocked drains and cockroaches
A slow or partly blocked drain is not just a nuisance; it is an open restaurant for cockroaches. Grease, hair, soap residue and food scraps build up on the pipe walls and form a damp, slimy layer that cockroaches and drain fly larvae feed on. The longer water sits in the drain, the stronger the smells that attract insects.
A blockage can also point to a cracked or sagging pipe, and that crack may itself be a route for cockroaches from the soil or voids into the network. So in many cases we recommend combining pest control with drain unblocking, especially when there is a persistent smell or slow drainage in more than one drain.
After unblocking and treatment, regular cleaning of bathrooms and drains helps prevent the problem returning; you can find practical tips in our article on bathroom sanitisation in UAE homes.
How a professional company treats drain cockroaches
Treating American cockroaches focuses on their source and route more than on the inside of cupboards. Treatment usually goes through these stages:
1. Inspection and finding the source
The technician checks all drains and their covers, dry traps, gaps around pipes and laundry rooms, and at villas also the manholes, rainwater drains and garden. In buildings they ask about the condition of bin rooms and shafts, because treating inside the flat alone is not enough if the source is shared.
2. Treating drain openings
Drains and floor openings are treated with licensed products intended for this use, such as gel, foam or targeted treatment on the rims of openings and inside the top part of the pipe, so that the product stays where the cockroaches pass.
3. Treating the perimeter and voids
A targeted residual spray is applied along walls in laundry rooms, stores and around pipes, and dust may be used in enclosed voids. At villas, manholes and the outside perimeter of the building are treated to create a barrier that reduces cockroaches getting in.
4. Baits and monitoring stations
Baits are placed in suitable spots in damp areas, together with monitoring traps to assess the result. Fogging or fine misting is used only in specific cases, such as bin rooms or large manholes, and only by trained technicians.
5. Sealing recommendations and follow-up
The technician gives you a list of entry points that need repair, such as covers, traps and gaps, because pest control without sealing gives only a temporary result. A follow-up visit is arranged when needed, especially at villas and buildings with an ongoing outside source.
Preparing for the visit and after treatment
Before the visit, clear the area under the sinks, move rugs away from drains, and make sure the laundry room and manholes can be reached. Tell the technician where and when you see cockroaches, and whether there are children, pets or people with allergies in the home.
After treatment:
- Follow the re-entry time the technician gives you if a residual spray was used, ventilate well, and keep children and pets away until surfaces are dry.
- Do not wash the treated floors around the drains for the first day or two unless you are told to.
- It is normal to see dead or slow-moving cockroaches in the first few days, as they come out of the network after contact with the product.
- Carry out the recommended sealing work as soon as possible, and keep pouring water into drains you do not use.
Residents usually notice a clear drop within one to two weeks. If the source is the building's or street's network, an occasional cockroach may still appear; then sealing and coordinating with building management become the key. When do you need a pest control company?
- If you see large cockroaches regularly, not just once a month.
- If you find egg cases inside the home, which means some are starting to breed indoors.
- If there is a constant drain smell, slow drains, or cockroaches coming out of more than one opening.
- If you have a villa with a garden and many manholes, and cockroaches appear in walkways and the outdoor kitchen.
- If you manage a building and receive complaints from several flats at once.
We provide cockroach control across all emirates, including cockroach control in Abu Dhabi, with inspection of entry points and treatment of drains and perimeter. Prices usually start from AED 150 for a small flat and vary with size, property type and the level of infestation.
Frequently asked questions
Does the American cockroach really fly?
Yes, it can fly short distances, usually on hot nights or when disturbed. But it relies mainly on walking and running.
Why do I find large cockroaches after coming back from travel?
Because the water in the traps evaporated while you were away, leaving the drains open to the sewer network. Pour water into the drains before and after travelling, and use tight covers.
Is spraying inside the drain enough?
No. Household spray does not reach deep into the network and may push cockroaches out of another opening. The best solution is sealing, maintaining traps and professional treatment of openings and the perimeter.
Does the American cockroach breed inside the flat?
It can breed in damp, dark places if it stays there long enough, such as stores and laundry rooms. But in most cases it comes from the drains, which is why sealing is the most important step.
Do I need drain unblocking as well as pest control?
If drainage is slow or there is a persistent smell, unblocking removes the layer cockroaches feed on and reveals any cracked pipes, so the treatment works better and lasts longer.
Who is responsible for treating bin rooms and drains in a building?
Common areas such as bin rooms, shafts and the main network are usually the responsibility of building management or the landlord. Inform them in writing if cockroaches are coming from these areas.
